It’s your job as a parent to try to guide your children in the right direction, and you do your best at it every day. Whether you are encouraging them to do well in school or be kind to those around them, having excellent guidance as a child is a must. Another way you try to help out your children is by teaching them about the importance of maintaining excellent oral hygiene. Ultimately, no one wants to spend extra time in the dental chair having cavities filled – especially kids! You may want to consider purchasing an electric toothbrush for your child, but at what age? Here’s what you should know.

When Should Your Child Start Using an Electric Toothbrush?

Most kids can start using an electric toothbrush by the time they reach the age of two. At this point in their development, it’s important that a parent or trusted adult supervises them while they brush. Many parents don’t make the switch for their children until they are between the ages of 6 and 8, but it all depends on the child. With proper technique, a manual toothbrush is also sufficient. Ultimately, it is all up to personal preference.

4 Things to Look for When Choosing an Electric Toothbrush for Your Child

  • Plaque Removal: The most important thing about a toothbrush is that it removes buildups of plaque from the surface of the teeth. This is crucial for cavity protection and preventing gingivitis.
  • Head Shape: Head shape and size should be considered. There are multiple hard-to-reach places in the mouth. Some heads are more effective than others.
  • Bristle Quality: Quality bristles can last up to three months before needing to be replaced. If your child isn’t using a toothbrush with high-quality bristles, their oral hygiene could suffer.
  • Power Source: It’s better to choose an electric toothbrush that is rechargeable instead of one that uses batteries.

3 Things to Know Before Getting Your Child an Electric Toothbrush

  • Patience: Some younger children can be frightened by electric toothbrushes. They are unfamiliar, make noise, vibrate, and can trigger sensitive gag reflexes.
  • Guidance: Your child will need your help as they are learning. If they watch you use an electric toothbrush with excellent technique, this can help them grow accustomed to it.
  • Observation: Some children breathe through their mouths more than their noses, making it more difficult for them to brush correctly. Keep an eye on them to ensure that they aren’t having too much difficulty.

Electric toothbrushes are an excellent tool for adults and children. With the tips listed above, you can set your child’s smile up for success!
