Parents of toddlers know that life starts moving a bit faster than before. As these little humans start to run and play more, the potential for accidental injuries increases. Also, the ability to eat a wider variety of foods can negatively impact the health of their teeth and gums, especially if they’re exposed to too many sugars and starches. At Maine Pediatric Dentistry, though, we can minimize the potential harm their smile might face by offering dentistry for toddlers in Auburn and South Portland. Call us today to find out how we can help you navigate this time in your child’s life so that their smile doesn’t suffer.

Toddler Teeth Development

It is not uncommon for a child’s first tooth to erupt between the ages of six and 12 months. Whether it is one or both bottom teeth, they require proper care. As your child continues to grow, you can expect their teeth to begin coming in every few months until finally, all 20 are firmly in place – until they decide to fall out that is. The general timeline for initial tooth eruption of all baby teeth is between six months to three years.

What Is Teething?

Part of the tooth eruption process is the uncomfortable reality known as teething. Uncomfortable for most babies and toddlers, this process occurs when pearly whites push through the gumline. However, as this happens, you and your baby can find ways to reduce the discomfort. Some of the safest, most effective options include the use of a cold, clean washcloth for them to chew on, the use of teething toys (those not to be placed in a freezer or contain liquid inside them), or eating cold solid foods (if able) so that it temporarily relieves discomfort.

How to Clean Your Toddler’s Teeth and Gums

The most effective way to keep your toddler’s teeth and gums clean is to start by using a clean, wet washcloth and gently rubbing their soft oral tissues to remove any accumulated food particles. You’ll then want to use either a finger brush or a small, soft-bristled toothbrush with a smear of toothpaste (the size of a grain of rice) to clean their erupted teeth. This will protect them against tooth decay and cavities.
